Standing Together for Farmers: Supporting Mental Health in Agriculture

Agriculture is built on resilience, determination, and a deep commitment to feeding and fueling the world. Farmers work long hours, face unpredictable challenges, and carry the responsibility of their land, livestock, and families every single day. While that dedication is something to be proud of, it also means farmers often carry a heavy load—sometimes silently.

Across the country, organizations within agriculture are recognizing the importance of supporting the people behind the work. A recent partnership between the Sumter County Farm Bureau and Everglades Equipment Group is a powerful example of how the agricultural community can come together to care for its own.

A Small Reminder That Can Make a Big Difference

Through this partnership, Everglades Equipment Group began placing decals inside the cab of every tractor they sell, displaying the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. It’s a simple reminder placed where many farmers spend long hours during planting, harvest, and everything in between.

Sometimes the quiet moments in a tractor cab are when thoughts weigh the heaviest. Having that number visible serves as a reminder that help is always available and that no one has to face life’s challenges alone. The 988 Lifeline connects people with trained counselors 24 hours a day, offering free and confidential support to anyone who needs someone to talk to.

Agriculture Is Stronger When We Support Each Other

Farming is more than a profession; it’s a calling. But the pressures that come with agriculture can be significant. Weather, markets, equipment breakdowns, long hours, and the constant uncertainty of the industry can all take a toll. The strength of agriculture has always been its people and the communities that stand behind them. When neighbors look out for neighbors, and the industry comes together, incredible things happen.

Initiatives like this one help break down the stigma around mental health and remind farmers that asking for help is not a weakness—it’s a sign of strength.

The Role of Equipment Dealers in the Farming Community

Equipment dealerships are more than places to buy tractors and parts. They are gathering places for conversations, advice, and relationships that often last generations. Dealers work side by side with farmers through the ups and downs of every season. At Valley Plains Equipment, we believe agriculture is about more than equipment—it’s about people. The farmers and families we serve are the heart of our communities, and their well-being matters.

Agriculture has always been about helping each other through the tough times and celebrating the good ones together. Because when farmers are supported, agriculture grows stronger, at Valley Plains, we are committed to helping each and every farmer.

If you or someone you know is struggling, help is always available through the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988. Some other great resources are available at www.Ruralminds.org
