Safety Monday: Stress Prevention for Farmers
Stress prevention for farmers means knowing you don’t have to handle everything alone. There are resources and support systems ready to help, no matter the season.
Farming isn’t easy—planting, harvest, and even the off-season all come with their own pressures. Stress prevention for farmers is crucial because the mental load can affect both decision-making and safety.
Here is a list of area resources to support farmers and their families:
- North Dakota Farm to Farm Counseling Services: offering resources to individuals across the state from regular therapy sessions to community forums and even printable, educational materials.
- Minnesota Farm and Rural Helpline: Free, confidential, 24/7. Call: 833-600-2670 Or Text: FARMSTRESS to 898211
- SDSU Free Mental Health Maintenance Check: SDSU Extension offers a behavioral health voucher program for farmers, ranchers, agribusiness professionals and their immediate family members. The voucher program will include funding for up to five free mental health counseling sessions at Rising Hope Counseling.
-
Farm Aid & Farm Bureau programs: Community connections, mental health resources, and peer support.
-
Telehealth options: Access a counselor from home—or even from the cab.
Farming can be stressful any time of year, but reaching out and using available support protects both your well-being and your farm. Stress prevention for farmers isn’t just smart—it’s essential for a safe, productive operation.
